Hand over Hand/
The Sailor Likes His Bottle - O!

Words & music traditional

Hand, hand, hand over hand!
Devil run away with a Liverpool man.
Hand, hand, hand over hand!
Devil run away with a Liverpool man.

Oh, the mate was drunk and he went below
To take a swig o' his bottle - O!

    So early in the morning,
The sailor likes his bottle - O!

A bottle of beer, a bottle of wine,
A bottle of Old Jamaicy - O.

    So early in the morning...

The judies - O, the judies - O,
The sailor likes the judies - O!

    So early in the morning...

The lassies o' Pool, the lassies o' Tyne,
A chowlah so fine and dandy-O!

    So early in the morning...

Tobaccy - O, tobaccy - O,
The sailor likes tobaccy - O!

    So early in the morning...

"Hand over Hand/ The Sailor Likes His Bottle - O!" - this is one of the sequences I've use to when hauling of the halyards of the gaf - rigged schooner "Pioneer". "Liverpool man" - was used to stabilize and start to feel the weight of the sail. The "sweating sing - out" at the end is one of my favorites - the one sung by F.P. Harlow's Norwegian shipmate "Handsome Charlie" aboard the medium clipper "Akbar" in 1876 - 77.
