Cheap Boat for Sale

Words: Jon Heslop
Music: Jon Heslop

Cheap boat for sale, I don't need her any more.
Cheap boat for sale, going to leave her on shore.

Once she was my livelihood, once she was my trade
When I was young, the work was good
A living to be made,
But now the nets are empty, lean as a beggars purse
And every day the fish get fewer
And the living it gets worse.

It's cheap boat for sale, I don't need her any more.
Cheap boat for sale, going to leave her on shore.

The first time that I went to sea I was just a lad,
But I stood proud and I stood tall
A man just like my dad.
The work was hard, the seas unkind, fishing was the thing,
But, oh the times we came ashore
The fisherman was king.

Now it's cheap boat for sale, I don't need her any more.
Cheap boat for sale, going to leave her on shore.

And now I sit and watch the sea, the fishing 's nearly done
There's very little left for me, and nothing for my son.
For the Armada from the coast of Spain
It strips the ocean bare.
Where we took crans, now they take tons
And no-one really cares.

So it's cheap boat for sale, I don't need her any more.
Cheap boat for sale, going to leave her on shore.
Cheap boat for sale, cheap boat for sale.

"Cheap Boat for Sale" - I first heard Jon sing this at the "Elephants Nest" in Cornwall and immediately asked him if I could sing it. He happily agreed and it remains one of my favourite songs. I hope we do it justice. Many thanks Jon for this and other songs you have written.
