Music Midi MC - Round the Capstan
South Australia

Words (except the last verse) & music traditional

In South Australia I was born,
Heave away, haul away!
In South Australia, 'round Cape Horn,
We're bound for South Australia!

    Haul away, you rolling kings,
    Heave away, haul away!
Haul away, oh hear me sing,
    We're bound for South Australia!
Oh, South Australia's me native land,
Rich in lizards, flies and sand,
    Haul away, you rolling kings...
Oh, South Australia's a decent place,
To get drunk there is no disgrace,
    Haul away, you rolling kings...
As I went out one morning fair,
Who should I meet but Nancy Blair
    Haul away, you rolling kings...
I shook her up, I shook her down,
I shook her 'round and 'round the town,
    Haul away, you rolling kings...
There ain't but one thing grieves my mind,
To leave Miss Nancy Blair behind.
    Haul away, you rolling kings...
Our boots and clothes are all in pawn,
And it's mighty drafty 'round Cape Horn,
    Haul away, you rolling kings...

In South Australia Skylab fell,
Sixty million ($) shot to hell,

"South Australia" - this is a fine old Downton - pump chantey, in more or less the version I used to sing with the groups "Barbary Tars" and "Dogwatch Nautical Band" in San Francisco. The verse about Skylab was made by the maintenance crew of the ship "Balclytha" of the San Francisco Maritime Museum.
The Polish version based on the same melody line was recorded as "Płyńmy do Australii" on the CD "Sea Songs & Shanties".
