St. Malo

Words & music traditional

On the 14 - th of November straight to the French coast we did steer.
All against the brave St. Malo with our ships we did draw near,
With our English colours flying in the sight of all the town
And the brave bold resolution to burn St. Malo down.

Our bombs we then did fire and they fell into the town,
Which caused the French to admire to see their buildings tumble down.
Then some men were prisoners taken in the sight of all the town,
While we waited in our longboats to burn St. Malo down.

When at last we saw St. Malo it was to ruin brought
And the prouding noble Louis - he was a lesson taught.
On the 15-th of November we did set their ships aflame
And then many a noble building we treated it the same.

"St. Malo" - 18th century song., time of the Stuart Kings (James). Navy corrupt, invented victories, a little skirmish would be made into a great battle. Often reverse was the truth. Culminated in 1797 mutinies and changes.
colours flying - many would not reveal flag until last moment. Song is boasting bravery.
longboats - attack boat like whaler - rowed to shore rather then sailed.
Louis - King of France.
noble building - Halls of Knights of Fleur de Lys. Unlikely they did this.
